Secretariat wins the Belmont Stakes

by 31 lengths
NOTE:  The caption for this painting was written by legendary Sports Illustrated sportswriter and best-selling book author, Bill Nack.  Mr. Nack won the Eclipse Award for writing seven times and is considered the official biographer of Secretariat.  Mr. Nack's book, "The Making of a Champion," was the basis of the 2010 motion picture, "Secretariat," produced by Disney Studios.
The bottom margin of each print contains the following caption:
"On June 9, 1973, in what many horsemen have called the greatest performance ever seen in the sport, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths.  He raced the mile-and-a-half in a scorching 2:24 flat, smashing the course mark by nearly three seconds while bursting, in full flight, from the shaded paddocks of history into the sunlit realms of legend.  This transcendent feat of strength, speed and endurance made him America's ninth Triple Crown winner, left him with three Classic marks that stand yet today, and ultimately anointed Secretariat as the standard against which all other Thoroughbreds would be measured,  It moved veteran turf writer Charles Hatton to declare, for the ages: "Secretariat's only point of reference is himself."  - Bill Nack
