Autumn on the Backstretch

~ Saratoga Race Course ~

The annual race meeting at historic Saratoga ends on Labor Day. However, though only a few trainers remain, the backstretch stays open until November.

Last October, I had to return to Saratoga. While there I decided to visit an old friend, Seth Gregory. Seth's an assistant trainer and future star in this business. He presides over a string of trainer Mark Hennig's horses during the Fall before departing with them for Florida.

As I made my way to Hennig's barn area, I was literally taken aback by the scenery of Saratoga Race Course in the Fall. At every turn, Mother Nature was absolutely stunning. Ironically, I'd been selling my artwork on-track during the July-August-September race meeting for 17 years, but had never seen the track during the Fall months! In an instant, I knew a view of this gorgeous backstretch would be my next painting. I spent hours making sketches and taking pictures. The visit with a friend never materialized.

I designed this composition to complement the size of "Backstretch Morning ~ Saratoga" ... my other Saratoga barn area painting. "Autumn on the Backstretch" is the most colorful painting I've ever done. It would be an excellent choice for any horse lover and with its array of color, will fit in any room.
