" Backstretch Morning - Saratoga "

"It is, of course, the oldest track in America and its ways are old-fashined ways. After eleven months of new-fashioned ways, it's as restful as old slippers, as quiet as real joy."

- Legendary sports writer, Joe Palmer, writing about Saratoga

As more than an artist who just makes his living from the industry, but rather as a fan of thoroughbred racing, I've been to every major racetrack in North America.    I can emphatically state that there's NO other track like Saratoga.   Racing fan or not, if you've never been there, you don't know what you're missing.

Racing since 1863, they've done it longer than anyone, and I believe, do it better.    However, it isn't only that the quality of racing is the best, but as legendary trainer Woody Stephens once said, "It ain't the 30 days that getchya', it's the 30 nights."    If you stay in town for your visit, it can be a totally pedestrian vacation.    The track sits on Union Avenue among the beautiful Victorian homes. And its main street, Broadway, loaded with restaurants, shops and everything else, is just a short walking distance the other direction.

The old Model T's notwithstanding, this painting is an actual scene of today's Saratoga backstretch. No embellishments. I added the old cars to emphasize that this barn area, which has been largely unchanged, goes back for the better part of a century. On the front-side, you can have breakfast at the rail while watching the workouts of best horses in the country.   During the afternoon, race-goers still spread blankets on the open lawn, open their picnic baskets and enjoy a day at the races, the way it used to be.    You watch champion horses, up close, being saddled under the trees in the "backyard" paddock, where bus boys are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with multi-millionaires.   In my opinion, it's simply the best venue for Thoroughbred racing in the world.

If you love the atmosphere of thoroughbred racing, this is the print for you.
